HONG KONG, April 14 - The "2024 Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei-Hong Kong-Macao Youth Innovation and Technology Talent Development Summit", as part of the inaugural "Hong Kong World Youth Science Conference" series, was successfully held at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The event brought together over 300 participants including Nobel laureates, Turing Award winners, and outstanding innovation talents and entrepreneurs from Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Hong Kong and Macao to discuss cutting-edge technology trends and explore collaborative innovation projects.
The summit established a broader, multi-dimensional exchange and cooperation platform for young innovators, creating infinite possibilities for fueling Hong Kong's high-quality development and achieving breakthroughs in new quality productive forces.
The event was attended by distinguished guests including:
Li Ran, President of Hong Kong Beijing Universities Alumni Alliance
Chen Jiaxian, North and Northeast China Representative of Hong Kong Trade Development Council
Zhang Fa, Deputy Secretary-General of Beijing Overseas Friendship Association
Yang Guang, Director of Beijing Overseas Friendship Association Hong Kong Office
Wang Ling, Deputy Director of Beijing Overseas Friendship Association Hong Kong Office
Zeng Fulin, Deputy Director of Beijing Overseas Talent Center
Wang Xuanhua, Executive Director of Beijing Talent Work Leading Group's Hong Kong and Macao Talent Liaison Office
In his speech, Zhang Fa emphasized the complementary advantages between the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and the Greater Bay Area in technological innovation. He pointed out that integrating the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region's high-level basic research with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area's market-oriented innovation system would facilitate industrial chain cooperation between these two major city clusters.
Zhang noted that enterprises across Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, Hong Kong and Macao would jointly benefit from investment opportunities created by international innovation hubs, policy dividends from regional development initiatives, the dynamic ecosystem of global digital benchmark cities, expansive consumer markets in international consumption centers, industrial expansion through Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei coordinated development, and premium services from comprehensively optimized business environments. This integrated approach is poised to create synergistic advantages for regional development and technological advancement.
"Youth represent the future, youth create the future. Only by engaging the youth can we secure tomorrow," stated Li Ran during her keynote address. She emphasized that since its founding in July 2022, the Hong Kong Beijing Universities Alumni Alliance has capitalized on Hong Kong's status as a global innovation hub to foster international scientific collaboration, with particular focus on empowering emerging innovators.
The alliance has successfully convened top young STEM talent worldwide, initiating a series of programs that have generated significant societal impact. Li noted that at the April 13 opening ceremony, Chief Executive John Lee reaffirmed the government's commitment to establishing Hong Kong as a premier international platform for cross-sector collaboration spanning government, industry, academia and research sectors.
Li expressed optimism that this inaugural conference would enhance multinational cooperation in talent development, R&D initiatives, and technology transfer among the five participating regions.
The 2024 summit coincided with the 10th anniversary of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei integration initiative, attracting an illustrious delegation including six Nobel laureates and one Turing Award recipient.
2019 Nobel Prize-winning physicist Didier Queloz delivered a keynote speech at the summit, sharing his pioneering work on exoplanet discovery. He emphasized how technological innovation has revolutionized the search for planets beyond our solar system, while noting that scientific progress often depends on sustained funding and global collaboration.
"The only true barrier is cost—not imagination," Queloz remarked, calling for greater investment in fundamental research to unlock future breakthroughs.
At the summit, 2010 Nobel Prize-winning physicist Sir Konstantin Novoselov delivered a keynote address on "Materials of the Future," highlighting graphene's transformative applications across industries. The graphene pioneer challenged young innovators to solve a critical bottleneck: "How can we produce graphene more economically?"
Novoselov envisioned a new era of materials science where AI-driven manufacturing could create previously unimaginable material structures tailored to human needs. His insights sparked lively discussion among attending young scientists and entrepreneurs about the convergence of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence.
2021 Turing Award recipient Jack Dongarra presented on high-performance computing and AI/ML advancements, stressing the need for processors with higher speed, lower power consumption, and reduced costs to drive next-generation innovation.
Young scientist Giulio Chiribella delivered a keynote speech titled "Quantum Causality".
Young scientist Shen Yushi delivered a keynote speech titled "Digital-Intelligent Convergence Ushers in a New Era of General AI," discussing AI's role in advancing new quality productivity. He introduced the coming "Dual-G Era" (Generation and General AI), highlighting how future general artificial intelligence will demonstrate cross-domain integration capabilities.
The roundtable discussion featured representatives from Beijing Microstructure Biotech, Beijing Guhaitianmu Biomedical Technology, and Beijing Jinshengda Bioelectronics sharing insights on biotech development. As a key driver of high-quality growth, biotechnology has drawn significant attention. Participating scientists emphasized that bio-manufacturing represents a crucial area for coordinated Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei development, with a proposed division of labor: R&D in Beijing and production scaling in Tianjin/Hebei. They projected accelerated advancement through integrated "government-industry-academia-research-investment" collaboration.
At the conference, Zhou Wenxia, special-term expert at the Beijing Talent Development Strategy Research Institute and professor at Renmin University's School of Labor and Human Resources, released the Global Urban Talent Retention Index Report. She emphasized that talent is the core element of innovation and technology development, noting that the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area is one of China's most open and economically vibrant regions. In building the Greater Bay Area into a high-level talent hub, Hong Kong possesses distinct advantages including a dynamic economy, nationally leading labor productivity, and an open culture, giving it a unique leadership role.
Witnessed by Li Ran, Chen Jiaxian, Zhang Fa, and Zeng Fulin, five rounds of signing ceremonies were held between leading financial institutions – including Guotai Junan International Holdings, Guolian Securities (Hong Kong), CMB International Capital, Chong Hing Bank, and CSC Financial (International) – and multiple innovation-driven enterprises.
The event highlighted emerging opportunities in the new wave of technological revolution and industrial transformation. A total of 106 outstanding sci-tech enterprises from the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region participated in various engagement formats, including exhibition roadshows, pitch sessions, and roundtable discussions. Beijing Hi-Tech Innovation Services showcased the HICOOL Global Entrepreneurs Summit and Pitch Competition as a key platform for startup growth.
During the afternoon session, young entrepreneurs from Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei, Hong Kong, and Macao presented their innovation projects, facilitating cross-border partnerships. Delegates engaged in focused dialogues on new materials, IT, green initiatives, advanced manufacturing, AI, smart cities, aerospace, and professional services, driving in-depth collaboration across sectors.
